The healthcare industry is comprised of a number of dedicated sectors, among them the cosmetic surgery industry.

Advancements in the field’s technologies, as well as demand from an ageing population that often feels younger than it looks, have led to a marked increase in people seeking plastic surgery and other cosmetic treatments. With the increase comes a need for increasingly skilled nurses to care for patients both in the operating room and in aftercare.

Cosmetic nursing qualifications
As with any type of specialised nursing, you need to acquire a qualification as a Registered Nurse before you can pursue a cosmetic nursing career. Following that study period you will need to work for at least two years as a surgical nurse, with at least half of that time spent assisting specifically with plastic surgery procedures.
Graduate programmes are also available for registered nurses to pursue their specialty in plastic surgery nursing. Many Nurse Practitioner programs offer the types of courses need to achieve this specialisation, including pre- and post-op care, cosmetic nursing techniques, and the diverse medical terminology that is associated with the specialty.

Advantages of nursing in the cosmetic surgery industry
The average salary for a cosmetic surgery nurse is comparable to that of any registered nurse working in a surgical setting, whether in or out-patient. The primary benefit with cosmetic nursing would be work hours. Though a cosmetic nurse working in a hospital setting may need to be available for evening, night and weekend shifts, the general working hours for plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments will be daytime hours. Cosmetic surgery practices usually offer flexible scheduling, including part-time hours, allowing you to work out a schedule that suits your needs while still maintaining your skill levels and income.

Opportunities for career advancement

Advancement in the cosmetic nursing industry is comparable to that of registered nurses and depends a great deal on your interest in pursuing continuing education and acquiring new skill sets. Courses in surgical techniques, new cosmetic treatments, and other CE coursework will keep you abreast of the latest advancements in the field, making you a more valuable asset in the operating theatre. You can also pursue certifications in specific surgical techniques or specialise in a specific area of cosmetic surgery, adding to your opportunities for advancement in the profession.

Contracting nursing has become a popular way to work for many nurses, allowing them the freedom to work with hospitals and clinics and gain experience and knowledge across the board. Nurses who can adjust to the concept of “tours-of-duty” at hospitals and clinics around the country, and who are willing to seek advice with IR35 to handle their personal tax affairs, will find the experience financially rewarding. It also provides exposure to a wide range of patients and physicians, helping to gain experience that is invaluable during a nursing career.

Cosmetic surgery nursing is a sector of nursing that will continue to grow as the demand to look younger and improve our appearance increases. With the opportunity to advance in the profession, earn a generous salary, and even the potential for travel, cosmetic nursing could be just the career you’re looking for.
