With the government’s announcement of the Youth Guarantee aiming to connect young people with jobs and training - The British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (BABTAC) and its education arm CIBTAC highlight beauty as a skilled, professional sector ready to deliver opportunities nationwide.
Hair and beauty used to be one of the most popular ways for people in the UK to get an apprenticeship, but the number of jobs in this field has dropped significantly in the last ten years. The Department for Education says that apprenticeship starts among young people are down 40% across the whole economy.
But the beauty industry could give thousands of young people real, paid, and professional career paths. Young people can earn money while they learn, gain real-world skills, and get recognised qualifications that will help them in their long-term careers through apprenticeships.
Diane Hey, founder of the government-approved Armonia Training Academy and BABTAC Board Member, comments on this:
“I’ve always wanted to furnish our apprentices with the things I learned on the job after my training, and what better way to learn than in a job. Our mission is to enable employers to develop thoughtful, empowered, highly skilled therapists and sector professionals that our industry so badly needs -this can be, and is, successfully achieved with apprenticeships.”
“We’ve found that apprentices learn quickly and can apply that learning practically while also earning a wage. Being able to showcase their ability and track their progress while learning and earning leads to personal development and greater workplace satisfaction.”
Lesley Blair MBE - CEO & Chair of BABTAC and CIBTAC adds, “Beauty is not a fallback, It’s a profession with real skills, income potential, and career longevity, and apprenticeships are one of the fastest way to get there. The Youth Guarantee will give the chance to expand these opportunities nationwide.”
