If you’ve been exploring skin rejuvenation options, then you’ve probably heard of hyaluronic acid by now. The hero ingredient in many aesthetic treatments, hyaluronic acid, or HA for short, has multiple skin benefits.

As well as hydrating, lifting and contouring skin, HA is hugely effective at smoothing the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles.

Here we explore how it works and why Pure Perfection Clinic recommends treatments that use it.

Understanding HA

HA is a natural substance found in the body, which helps give your skin its structure and keeps it well hydrated. With age, our HA declines, so replacing it with a safe synthetic version can help keep our skin looking plump and youthful.

HA in aesthetic products and treatments

Science means there are multiple forms of synthetic HA available for us to use in many aesthetic products and treatments. Different weights and strengths can address different concerns, including lines and wrinkles, dehydrated skin, volume loss, sagging and loss of facial definition. Some of the most popular and effective HA-based products we recommend are ZO Skin Health, Profhilo and Viscoderm Hydrobooster.

While these treat mild to moderate skin and ageing concerns, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are the best option for reducing deep lines and wrinkles.

HA for smoothing deep lines

We get deep lines for a couple of reasons. The first is repeated muscle activity through frowning, laughing, pouting and smiling, and the other is the decline of collagen, elastin and HA as we get older.

Deep lines and wrinkles related to facial expression appear either side of the eyes (crow’s feet), around the mouth (smoker’s lines), between the eyebrows (frown lines) and on the forehead. These generally respond well to anti-wrinkle injections, which have a smoothing effect for three to four months.

Other prominent deep lines that may bother you are known as nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines) and marionette lines (mouth to chin lines). These are more a result of overall collagen and elastin decline in the cheeks, leading skin to sag and ‘fold over’, causing the deep line appearance.

Instead of injecting the deep lines directly, which can lead to a puffy, unnatural appearance, we instead aim to ‘lift’ the sagginess with HA dermal fillers to unfold the skin and reduce their appearance. We’ll usually inject quite high up on the cheek to achieve this, with hugely effective results.
