Is It Worth Getting Botox In Your 20s?

Dr. Rupert Critchley BM MRCGP qualified as a medical doctor in 2009 and is a fully qualified and practicing General Practitioner.

At my clinic, we get tens of treatment and consultation requests every day and carefully consider each one.

As trained medical specialists, it’s our responsibility to work in a safe and ethical manner, and we will therefore only perform a treatment that’s suitable for the patient both psychologically and physically.

After all, it’s the well-being of the person that we care about most and we want our clients to look and feel their best for years to come.

With this in mind, we will discuss the topic of anti-wrinkle Botox injections on younger people.

Botulinum Toxin is the name of the muscle relaxing fluid commonly referred to as Botox (which is the brand name produced by Allergan).

Botox treatments are incredibly popular amongst both men and women all over the world, with the number of Botox treatments jumping by over 700% since 2000.

There are thousands of people who benefit from boosted confidence and increased self-esteem thanks to this treatment (not to mention a youthful, wrinkle-free complexion!), and I have no doubt that it will continue to be one of our most popular treatments in the 35 years + age range.

How Botox is a prevention for wrinkles
How old do you need to be to have Botox injections

The questions that cause controversy are “How young is too young?” and “Does Botox work as a preventative measure?” These are incredibly relevant and valid questions.

Firstly, it’s important to state that we do not recommend that anyone under the age of 18 has a non-surgical cosmetic treatment, regardless of the requested procedure or patient capacity.

Therefore, we feel that anyone under the age of 18 is too young. From the age of 18 and up, we will carefully consider the request, analysing the possible risks, results and reasons behind the request on a case by case basis.

Laura, one of my long-standing patients is 27. She had her first Botox injections at 25 in her forehead and glabella (the area between the eyebrows). Here she talks about why she decided Botox was the right option for her:

“At 25, I started to think about the first signs of ageing. I haven’t started to see any wrinkles, but when I frowned, the lines between my eyebrows would sometimes stay and it would take a good night’s sleep and lots of moisturiser to get rid of them. I decided to go to speak to a specialist about Botox injections.

I was advised that a small amount of Botox between my eyebrows and across the lower part of my forehead would stop these lines from forming straight away, and would likely prevent deeper lines in the future. After a few weeks, I decided the treatment was right for me and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

My muscles have been relaxed so I don’t try to use them as much now; the treatment has trained me to use my facial muscles differently and even when the effects of Botox wear off, I don’t scrunch my face up like I did before. As I didn’t wait for wrinkles to form, my skin looks as smooth as it did 10 years ago.

I do not need much Botox to get the results I want. I’m aware that too much can be damaging, but I trust the Doctor’s experience and medical understanding. I only top up about once a year and it’s working wonders for me.”

Los Angeles facial plastic surgeon Karan Dhir, M.D. supports Laura’s case.

"Botox can help prevent deep imprinted lines that we call wrinkles because of the effect of relaxing the muscles that can crease the skin," he says in a Glamour interview.

"Patients in their twenties have sufficient volume and thickness of the facial skin. It can withstand the folding and creasing forces of the underlying muscle.

The skin begins to lose volume and thins notably between the ages of 30 to 40. This, in my opinion, is the time to begin Botox treatments—right before the creases have an opportunity to become deeply imprinted."

In summary, starting to have Botox injections in your mid to late 20s can give great results that benefit patients long into the future. From years of firsthand experience, and the feedback I get from my patients, I believe that if administered correctly, and in the correct doses, Botox for wrinkle prevention is indeed better than cure.
