The shift from plastic surgery towards minimally invasive procedures is a hot topic these days.
Many patients who may have opted for plastic surgery in the past are choosing non-surgical alternatives. The reason most quoted is the current financial melt-down - on balance, minimal invasive procedures are less expensive than surgery after all.
But I suspect there’s more to it than that. Minimal invasive procedures have advanced in leaps and bounds over the last 10 years and we now have excellent non-surgical treatments which not only improve lines, wrinkles and folds, but can also replace lost volume on cheeks, say, re-contour and re-define actual facial structure.
So many things that were once corrected exclusively by surgery can be treated non-surgically these days.
But while the surgical versus non-surgical debate looks set to get even hotter, let’s not forget the crucial supporting role that skincare plays in keeping skin looking younger for longer.
A good daily skincare regime can significantly benefit your skin’s surface and texture, by improving elasticity and irregular pigmentation as well as fine lines and wrinkles.
As a dermatologist, I can't stress enough how important skincare is. In our 20s, mother nature helps to hide many of our 'skincare sins'. But from our 30s onwards, our skin is much less forgiving - years of neglect become more and more obvious.
This is the decade that begins to sort conscientious skin carers from the rest. If you’ve used regular sun protection, avoided sunbeds and have never smoked - believe me, it shows now!
There’s little doubt in my mind that a daily skincare regime can delay the need for minimally invasive procedures and, to some extent, even surgery. But - and this is important - you need to use evidence-based, cosmeceutical products and use them properly.
And this is the problem, isn’t it? There’s a jungle of very appealing products out there on the shelves and for consumers and practitioners alike it’s virtually impossible to sift through the hype and judge which are backed by serious science. In the clinic, patients are always asking me which skincare regime I recommend.
That’s why I have launched EudeloBoutique.com where everyone can find expert dermatologist tips tailored to their skin type, as well as my hand-picked choice of must-have products.
It’s my hope that this new website will change your approach to daily skincare, by introducing regimes that really work. Wasting cash on useless products versus investing in your future skin? No debate there, then.
