Industry-Insider Advice from Sue D’Arcy, iSmart CEO

As Black Friday approaches, shoppers are bracing for an avalanche of tempting beauty deals, especially on high-tech skincare gadgets like LED* masks. While the prospect of snagging a discounted LED mask may seem appealing, Sue D’Arcy, CEO and founder of iSMART, the leading global manufacturer of LED phototherapeutic devices, warns consumers to be cautious.

“Black Friday is a prime time for substandard, unregulated products to flood the market,” says D’Arcy. “Consumers need to be aware of what makes an LED mask effective and, more importantly, safe.” With over 20 years’ experience in developing cutting-edge LED technologies for some of the world’s most reputable brands (including Omnilux, MZ Skin, The Light Salon, Beauty Pie and more), D’Arcy is the go-to expert for all things LED.

Here, Sue shares her top tips on what to look out for and how to avoid wasting money on cheap, ineffective, or even unsafe LED products:

TIP 1. Check the Dosage:
The effectiveness of an LED mask depends on the wavelength of light, the intensity of the light source and the treatment time. “Some consumers believe that more powerful light is always better, but that’s not the case,” explains D’Arcy. “Higher intensity can actually inhibit cellular responses rather than promote them. Products making claims about extra wavelengths or higher intensities without clinical data may not work as intended - avoid!”

TIP 2. Understanding Colours & Claims:
Different wavelengths of light show as different colours, each with a unique purpose for skincare. However, it’s important to check what the mask is claiming to deliver with each of these wavelengths:
• Blue light (415nm) is effective against acne-causing bacteria, but beware masks claiming to ‘treat acne’ – this is a medical condition and devices require specific regulatory and clinical approvals.
• Red light (630nm): Best for anti-ageing – known for reducing inflammation, encouraging collagen production, and combating signs of ageing such as wrinkles and age spots.
• Near-Infrared light (830nm): These deeper-penetrating wavelengths are ideal for reducing inflammation and improving healing times. Penetrates deeper into the skin to enhance anti-ageing effects, especially when combined with red light.
• 1070nm wavelength: “The latest addition to the skincare toolbox, this deeper-penetrating wavelength is the only one FDA-cleared for tissue healing” says Sue.

TIP 3. Regulatory Checks & Retailers:
“Many masks make bold claims like ‘treats acne’or ‘stimulates genes’ without the clinical backing or regulatory approval for what should be a medical device,” D’Arcy warns. “Always check the product complies with UK regulatory bodies like the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and ensure the product has a UKCA mark.” Terms like “FDA-approved” or “FDA-registered” can also be misleading as these just mean the product is registered on the FDA database; they haven’t been reviewed for safety or efficacy. Always purchase from reputable retailers to ensure the devices meet legal standards and you’re protected if anything goes wrong.

So Which Masks Get Sue’s Stamp of Approval?
There are many high-quality LED masks on the UK market – some of Sue’s favourites include:

  1. MZ Skin LIGHTMAX SUPERCHARGED LED MASK 2.0
“This mask delivers multi-wavelength light therapy, targeting acne, inflammation, and anti-aging. It’s a luxury investment backed by science,” says D’Arcy.

  2. Omnilux Contour Face Mask
“Omnilux is a trusted name in LED light therapy, and this mask is no exception,” D’Arcy explains. “It offers clinically proven red and near-infrared light to stimulate collagen and reduce wrinkles.”

  3. Dr Sabrina Shah-Desai Eye Regenerate Led Mask
This under-eye mask delivers precise light therapy in combination with uniquely formulated, hydrocolloid patches that trigger collagen production. “This is a fantastic option for those concerned with their under-eye appearance” says D’Arcy.

The Last Word...
As consumers gear up for Black Friday, D’Arcy’s expert advice is a timely reminder to prioritise safety and effectiveness over price. “Not all LED products are created equal, and it’s crucial to do your homework before purchasing,” D’Arcy stresses. “At iSmart we’re passionate about helping consumers navigate this crowded market to ensure they have a safe and effective experience.”
