Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been classified as carcinogenic to humans. One important source of exposure to UV rays are indoor tanning facilities known as sunbeds.
There is strong evidence that use of sunbeds increases the risk of skin cancers, including malignant melanoma which is the deadliest type.
Using or starting to use sunbeds before the age of 35 years, increases the risk of malignant melanoma and almost doubles this risk. Tanning salons contribute significantly to the rates of skin cancer in the UK and the age at which people are legally allowed to use sunbeds should be increased from 18 to 21 with advice and education about the potential risks it comes with looking tanned.
Even one sunbed session can increase your risk of developing squamous cell skin cancer by 67% and basal cell skin cancer by 29%.

More importantly is the increased risk of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. If you have ever used a sunbed your risk of melanoma increases by 20%.
A growing body of research suggests that excessive tanning is a behaviour with addictive potential in which is a problem by itself.
It certainly would help to explain why so many people continue to use sunbeds despite knowing the risks.
