Triple-wavelength lasers, also known as multi-wavelength or combination lasers, utilise a combination of three distinct wavelengths of light to target different components of the hair follicle: melanin, haemoglobin, and water.
These wavelengths typically include Alexandrite (755nm ode (810nm), and Nd: YAG (1064nm). By incorporating multiple wavelengths, these lasers can effectively target a wider spectrum of hair colours and depths, making them suitable for various skin types and conditions.
The Alexandrite wavelength primarily targets melanin, which is abundant in the hair shaft, while the Diode wavelength penetrates deeper into the follicle targeting melanin in the hair bulb.
The Nd: YAG wavelength has a higher affinity for haemoglobin and water, enabling it to reach deeper follicles and treat finer, lighter hairs. By combining these wavelengths, triple-wavelength lasers can achieve comprehensive and precise hair removal across a diverse range of hair and skin types.
Triple wavelength lasers have found wide-ranging clinical applications beyond traditional hair removal, including the treatments of other chronic skin conditions such as pseudo folliculitis barbae and hirsutism.
Laser hair removal is a promising therapeutic option for patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, offering the potential to reduce disease activity, alleviate symptoms, and improve quality of life. By targeting hair follicles, laser hair removal addresses one of the triggers of HS, providing a targeted and comprehensive management of HS. However, it is essential to recognise that laser hair removal is not a cure for HS but rather a supportive treatment modality.
The preferred device in my practice is The Alma Soprano Titanium device which is a cutting-edge laser system designed for painless, effective hair removal. It features a trio of wavelengths (755nm, 810nm, 1064nm) combined in a single applicator, enabling it to treat all skin types and hair textures. Its advanced cooling system, ICE Plus, minimizes discomfort while preventing skin damage. The device offers fast, large-area treatments, thanks to its large 4cm² spot size and high power output. Benefits include quick, comfortable sessions, long-lasting results, and suitability for a wide range of patients, making it a popular choice globally.
