Many women suffer from excessive bloat, it’s a common affliction that only now are we seeing highlighted on social media, because of the impact it can have on our day-to-day lives. The symptoms of excessive bloating are often referred to as feeling bloated or experiencing abdominal discomfort or swelling.

These symptoms can be caused by overeating, reactions to specific foods, digestive problems or can stem from underlying medical conditions. Some general tips to reduce bloating include:

- Eating slowly:  Chewing food thoroughly and taking your time whilst eating can reduce the amount of air swallowed (preventing the gassy, bloated feeling) and helps improve the digestive process and nutrient extraction in the gut.

- Being mindful of diet: Certain foods can be triggers for gas formation or bloating i.e. beans, lentils, certain vegetables, spices etc. By keeping a food diary, you can track which foods and ingredients may be causing your symptoms and causing discomfort. Carbonated drinks should also be avoided, to limit the amount of gas introduced to the system.

Being mindful of diet

Regular exercise: Movement and exercise promote good digestive function, which is key to reducing bloating.

- Drinking enough water: Being underhydrated can lead to constipation. By staying hydrated, our gut can function as normal, and we reduce the chance of bloating.

Stress can affect our gut health

Stress Management: Stress can affect our gut health by sending signals nervous system to the muscles governing digestion. The muscles are triggered into “fight or flight” mode which in turn can cause nausea, cramping, bloating or diarrhoea. Practicing mindfulness, deep breathing and yoga for example can help to reduce stress levels.

As with all health issues, please consult a doctor if you feel your symptoms require the attention of a medical professional.
