A growing number of young adults — some as young as 25 — are turning to homemade versions of Ozempic and similar weight loss injections, raising serious concerns among medical professionals.

This DIY trend, fueled by social media and the desire for rapid results, is alarming doctors who warn of the potential health risks involved.

As the popularity of self-administered, unregulated treatments rises, experts are urging caution and highlighting the dangers of bypassing proper medical supervision.

UK clinic reports receiving one enquiry every hour for "Saggy Pen Syndrome" – a treatment developed in response to the increasing demand caused by the potential side effects of rapid weight loss medications.

  • The biggest doctor-owned clinic chain in the UK, Dr Nyla Medispa sees 1 treatment enquiry every hour of the work day for "Saggy Pen Syndrome" - a backfired result from weight loss injections
  • Last October, the Government announced it would be investing £300 million in trials for weight-loss jabs
  • Clinic has had an influx of younger patients (aged 25-30) requesting skin tightening
  • Dr Nyla has even had a patient say they made an "at-home" version of Ozempic, using a powder bought from TikTok
  • Last summer, the World Health Organisation issued a warning over a spate of “fake Ozempic” drugs in circulation
  • 1 in 10 women in the UK having undergone weight-loss injectables

One of the UK’s leading aesthetic doctors has reported a significant increase in enquires for treatments that address the adverse effects of weight loss injectables.  Social media and UK culture's 2025 word "Ozempic face" has become more widely spoken about, however for those who can't afford to fix the side effects to their skin, it's a worrying concern for doctor's like Dr Nyla.

Dr Nyla, Cosmetic Doctor, GP Derm and Founder of the Dr Nyla Medispa group has received so many requests (1 every hour), that she has created a new treatment protocol specifically addressing the issue.  The treatment derived to rescue what she calls the "saggy pen syndrome", deriving from the weightloss pens being used and the sagging skin effect, combines some of the most advanced treatments and technologies in the world, that is bespoke to the individual and treats their individual needs.

As one of the UK’s most prestigious cosmetic doctors, and a favourite amongst celebrities, Dr Nyla is renowned for devising bespoke, multi-approach treatments to help her clients achieve natural-looking, non-surgical results.

Dr Nyla comments“An estimated 1 in 10 UK women have undergone weight loss injectables – an upward trend that’s not looking to go anywhere soon. Normally, weight loss is a slow and sustained process. When someone has taken weightless injections, the actual proteins in the skin — like collagen and elastin — don’t have time to develop and adapt, leading to the appearance of saggier skin and a more deflated appearance. Treating loose skin is not a new treatment offering, however, there has been an influx of enquiries and treatments associated with rapid weight loss medications such as Ozempic, where loss of facial fat and muscle tone results in a gaunt, aged appearance. People who go on Ozempic-like injections need strength training to maintain or even increase muscle mass and structural support. Essentially, the faster the weight loss, the more likely it is for the skin to not “snap back” as it should when weight loss is done in a healthy, gradual way.

Common side effects we notice from people who have lost weight quickly, linked to rapid weight loss medications, tends to be noticeable straight away as the area where they previously had excess fat and carried the most weight on their face and or body. These areas include the face – neck, cheeks and chin, as well as the body - abdomen, arms, thighs and lower back. All face and body loose skin can be treated, however, understanding the history of the skin can help your practitioner determine the best treatment plan.

The treatment plan we offer is bespoke and depends on many factors such as someone’s age, genetics and level of skin laxity. The method utilises a combination of treatments and therapies – perfect for face or body – and includes various combinations of radiofrequency, laser skin resurfacing, injectables and microneedling to stimulate collagen and improve the skin tone and tightness without surgery.

As with any treatment, the after and continued care for the skin should be actioned to up-keep results for the best results. Eating a balanced, nutrient rich diet – avoiding too much sugar and saturated fats, keeping the skin hydration both topically with creams that promote collagen production, and drinking plenty of water are all important and can influence the skin’s bounce-back ability.”
