Ruined lips after dissolving lip filler

Question: Ruined lips after dissolving lip filler

I’ve had a horrible experience with lip filler. A year ago I got my lips filled for the first time with 0.5ml and there was migration, so I got them dissolved 2 weeks later. I got them refilled a month later and the migration was still present but I decided to leave them alone.

A couple weeks after I got the lip filler my lips became really chapped and started peeling, I believe I got a mild case of exfoliative cheilitis. From what I’ve researched online, there is no link between the 2 but my problems with chapped and peeling lips started only after lip filler, I never had them before.

After suffering like this for 8 months I decided to get them dissolved. My lips are now wrinkled (even though I’m only 21) and deflated to a smaller size than before I got lip filler. I want to refill them again with a different brand of filler this time as my lips are so shrivelled, but I’m scared.

I’m depressed and I don’t know what to do about my lips anymore

Answer: Hello Maryjoe,

Firstly, I'm so sorry you had such a negative experience with your previous treatments. I hope this hasn't put you off, as lip filler treatments can really lift the face and improve confidence.

Unfortunately filler migration can be a risk with lip filler treatment if the filler isn't injected with precision and care for the anatomy.

Chapped and dry lips are rare after lip filler, as most filler products contain hyaluronic acid, which is a humectant that actually draws more hydration to the treated area. However, dry lips can happen after lip filler treatment if the lips have been overfilled and stretched.

To remedy this, I would recommend using an occlusive product like Vaseline or one containing Vitamin E and shea butter for at least a month after treatment.

If you'd like to book a consultation to discuss your options, please use the link in my bio (TD Aesthetics) on the Consulting Room.

Warm regards

Nurse Tawa
