Are dark circles – also known as sunken “tear troughs” – troubling you when you look in the mirror?
This is such a common problem area that many of my patients feel self-conscious about.
When we don’t get enough sleep, or are run-down and stressed, the dreaded dark circles can appear, and we find ourselves desperately dabbing on concealer to try to cover them up.
However, while some people find they can reduce their dark circles by getting a good night’s sleep, those of us who are a bit more unlucky can have persistent dark, sunken bags that won’t go away, no matter how much sleep we get.
As we age, our skin begins to sag. The pillows of fat beneath our skin, which give our face its shape, begin to decrease in mass – and our skin begins to lose some of its natural elasticity.
Add to this the fact that the skin under the eyes is very thin, and so shows the effects of ageing more prominently than other areas of our face.
Therefore, our tear troughs can sag and appear hollow, making us look tired and ageing us prematurely.
In fact, some people can even be born with this fat deficiency, which means they will have sunken tear troughs from a young age.
So, is there anything we can do about them?
There are a number of things that can be done to improve the appearance of dark, hollow-looking tear troughs. First of all, make sure you’re doing the obvious – getting enough sleep.
Lack of sleep can increase the blood supply to your skin, as your body tries to give you a boost of energy.
As the skin under your eyes is particularly thin, this can make it look like you have dark circles under your eyes – which can worsen the appearance of sunken tear troughs.
Staying hydrated is also a vital part of any good skincare regime – and that means drinking enough water as well as moisturising your skin with a nourishing moisturiser.
Vitamin C supplements can help boost the natural collagen production in your skin, helping to keep it firm, and retinol will help to smooth fine lines around the eyes, as well as thicken the under-eye skin.
Incorporating these steps into your skincare routine are great ways to improve sunken tear troughs at home – but if you’re still not happy with how the skin around your eyes looks, there is a treatment we can do in clinic.
A small amount of high-quality hyaluronic filler can be injected into specific areas under the eyes to plump up the sunken skin.
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our bodies but deteriorates quite quickly.
Hyaluronic acid injections last much longer, and so do the effects of it on our skin.
When injected, the hyaluronic acid gel can correct the fat deficiency and firm up the skin – exactly what’s needed in the case of sunken tear troughs.
This treatment is not invasive and, although pain is something many patients are concerned about, the injections have a very minimal discomfort level.
As soon as you leave the clinic, you can go about your day as usual.
Your eyes will look brighter and younger – exactly what we want when the rest of our face is covered by a mask!
