There are an endless number of issues that can be rectified with cosmetic dentistry

but sadly, some people with damaged or discoloured teeth avoid looking into cosmetic dentistry because they believe that their tooth damage or discolouration is too severe to be repaired.

This assumption couldn't possibly be further than the truth, as ever-evolving advancements in cosmetic dentistry have made it possible to repair or substantially improve the look of virtually any level of dental imperfection.

Cosmetic dentistry involves a wide variety of different dental procedures used to improve both the look and functionality of your smile, so with this in mind, here are just a few of the dental issues that can be repaired with cosmetic dentistry.

Stained or discoloured teeth

Over time our teeth can become discoloured or stained from things such as tea, coffee, wine, and cigarettes, and there are even some medications that are known to cause tooth discolouration.

The most common and inexpensive way to repair tooth discolouration is by teeth whitening or bleaching.

In most cases, a cosmetic dentist will be able to achieve a brighter/whiter shade for your teeth, with a custom mouthpiece and carbamide peroxide gel which will allow you to whiten your teeth at home.

Can stained or discoloured teeth be treated?

This is the most effective and long term whitening option available as it is a slightly slower and more long-lasting effect.

It is also a more suitable option for people that suffer from sensitive teeth as a lower strength gel is used in the mouthguard provided.

Teeth whitening treatments can have long-lasting effects if the teeth are properly maintained afterwards.

Teeth whitening will not make your teeth stain resistant to things like tea, coffee, or smoking so care should be taken after treatment to maintain your whiter smile for longer.

Chipped, broken, or over spaced teeth treatment options

Chipped, broken, or over spaced teeth

When teeth become chipped, broken or cracked, your cosmetic dentist can use bonding to improve their appearance.

Bonding is a fairly simple and inexpensive procedure that can usually be completed in a single office visit depending on the severity and number of teeth requiring repair.

Using an etching solution followed by bonding material (usually composite resin) that is tinted to match the colour of your teeth, the cosmetic dentist will apply the bonding material directly on to the damaged tooth's surface.

Bonding can also be used to protect an exposed root of a tooth as well as a filling for smaller sized cavities.

Bondings can last for several years, however, they can become easily stained or damaged if not properly cared for.

Another option to treat damaged teeth is by using veneers. Veneers are made from thin plastic or porcelain materials and are custom made to fit each specific patient's teeth.

Once the cosmetic dentist has created the veneer from the patient's tooth impression they are then cemented directly onto the damaged tooth or teeth.

Veneers are more expensive than bonding, however, they are able to treat more effectively repair severe damage, are much stronger, and have a longer life expectancy than bonding.

In some severe cases veneers and/or bonding may not be entirely effective. In this circumstance, your cosmetic dentist may suggest that you have crowns put on. Crowns are able to repair virtually any level of tooth damage and if looked after can last for the duration of your life, unsurprisingly this is a fairly expensive procedure, however, the results are brilliant and very long-lasting.

When to see a cosmetic dentist

Anyone with a bothersome or unsightly dental imperfection that affects the look of their smile can benefit from visiting a cosmetic dentist.

Dental issues such as chips, cracks, or discolouration will only worsen over time, the sooner you get into be treated the better if you wish to avoid extensive or costly treatment later down the line.
