As we return to work, a key feature of the ‘new normal’ will be operating enhanced cleaning rotas – especially around ‘high-touch areas’ to help minimise the spread of any virus that enters our clinic/salon.
With that in mind, my interest was piqued when I heard a Dentist, on one of the many webinars that I have attended, recommend a new long-acting disinfectant that could provide 30-day protection between cleaning rotas after one application.
On investigation of this new product called Zoono - https://zoono.co.uk/pages/zoono-business-industrial-solutions - it is based on a very well established antimicrobial agent called Benzalkonium Chloride, but with a twist where they have managed to keep its antimicrobial capacity active for 30 days using a silane based polymer.
Applying Zoono does not obviate the need for cleaning but claims to provide long-term antimicrobial activity between regular morning cleaning of surfaces. The problem with most disinfectants is that a surface can be easily contaminated again straight after cleaning and hence remain as a source of transmission until cleaned again.
Repeated cleaning of high touch areas such as door handles, keyboards, counter tops, toilet seats, shared kitchen space in clinics, chairs etc. can be laborious and time consuming during the day – so Zoono could give your clinic longer term protection between the regular morning cleans required to remove dirt and grease etc.
It also appears to be safe on most surfaces so can be used on fabrics and leather chairs/couches and keyboards etc.
Zoono is being distributed by Bunzl BCHS Cleaning & Hygiene supplies, a large specialist distributor carrying over 14,000 product lines with customers including the NHS, Education Establishments and Local Authorities.
Zoono can be purchased in 5 litre containers and is suitable for use in fogging systems as well as simply being applied with a cloth or spray bottle.
I recorded a 15-minute interview with Stuart Turnbull, who represents Bunzl, where we discuss how the product works, evidence for use, and how their customers are using ZOONO as part of their infection control process for their businesses.

As a footnote, in my research for this I also came across a similar technology that was claiming even longer protection times manufactured by NordiChem: https://nordicchem.com/technology/.
The UK distributor might also be worth talking to if this concept interests you: https://www.greenfacilities.co.uk/
