Navigating challenges as an entrepreneur

During the interview, Dr Totton highlighted the hurdles that need to be overcome when setting up a clinic, hiring staff, and maintaining regulatory compliance. She emphasised the importance of resilience and learning from setbacks. "It's essential to be passionate about what you do, but also practical. You need to plan well and be prepared for things to not always go smoothly," she advised. This sentiment will be expanded upon in her upcoming talk at the Aesthetics Business Conference, where she’ll offer more detail on overcoming such challenges.

The role of education and mentorship

Dr Totton also discussed how ongoing education and mentorship have been key to her success, both of which are central themes of the Aesthetics Business Conference. She highlighted the importance of continuously developing skills and staying informed on industry trends. As she prepares to speak at ABC 2024, she encouraged entrepreneurs to seek guidance and keep pace with regulatory changes in the ever-evolving aesthetics sector. Commenting on how winning The Apprentice 11 years ago has impacted her career and what she learned during the process, she said: “I've learned a lot from Alan Sugar, but one of the most valuable things I've learned from him is not to look at what your competition is doing. Only focus on your own business.  I was asked recently in an interview who I considered my competition to be. I couldn't name them. It really struck me that that is something I've learned from him through the years. We spend no time or energy doing competition analysis.”

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs

When asked for advice during the interview, Dr Totton emphasised the need to stay focused, plan meticulously, and ask for help when needed. She believes the aesthetics industry offers fantastic opportunities but cautioned that success doesn’t come overnight. "You must be prepared to invest time and effort," she remarked. This advice aligns with the practical insights that will be shared at the Aesthetics Business Conference 2024.
