Updates on eye area rejuvenation with non-surgical treatments

Effects of ageing skin gradually creep up. You feel good but the mirror tells a different story! Women and men believe the body part that most reveals their age is the eye area, followed by hands and facial skin.

Surgical treatments such as blepharoplasty can tighten loose eyelid skin but like any surgery can have risk of complications such as scarring. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a tricky procedure, even in expert hands. In addition too much fat removal can give a ‘hollowed-out’ look.

We have been using a CO2 laser for the last few years and as our experience has grown we have devised new ways of using it –refining and improving our results. Dr Bruce Katz from New York published a study on fractional CO2 laser resurfacing and showed promising results. He coined the term ‘Madonna Lift’.

Most doctors suggest that for best results patients may require up to five sessions over a period of time. However, patients want results rather quickly and I find that by making settings more aggressive we are able to provide results in fewer sessions. Most patients now require between 2- 3 sessions.

We have been very impressed by skin tightening in addition to reversing signs of photo damage and improving skin quality in the peri-ocular area and the eyelids. This cannot be achieved just by skin excisional surgery.

Photographs accompanying this blog show a significant amount of skin tightening. This would have been impossible to achieve non-surgically until recently. I believe that we now have an alternative to blepharoplasty.

Another revolutionary technique has been tear trough rejuvenation with Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers such as Restylane. New injection methods now allow us to achieve excellent results without any bruising or downtime. Results such as these are typically achieved and can be combined with use of the CO2 laser for overall improvement.

Fat injections are also making a comeback and fat is an excellent filler to provide volume even in eyebrows and temporal hollows. It is especially attractive for patients who are considering liposuction. Suctioned fat can be used to provide a volumetric lift to facial areas or for the whole face.

Dr Sanjay,
Which power, spacing and velocy do you used in this patients?
Thanks: Dra. Mirela Borges ( Brazil)

Dr Mirela Borges

Dear Dr Borges
My typical settings are power 15w, DOT spacing 500 to 900 ┬Ám, dwell time 500-900 ms. I use stack mode 1-3 depending on downtime patients can tolerate. You will know however that these settings are going to be different for different machines. These are for smartxide DOT CO2 laser. I hope this helps. Which machine are you using ?
