It is very important that you follow the advice of your practitioner carefully after dermabrasion. The aim is to keep the wound soft and free from infection during the healing process to help the treatment work as effectively as possible and to reduce the risk of complications.
After dermabrasion you may be advised to: 
<ul><li>use recommended painkillers as required;</li><li>take sleeping tablets as prescribed for the first few days following your procedure;</li><li>sleep on your back with your head propped up by a few pillows;</li><li>apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (usually supplied by your doctor)) several times a day;</li><li>return to your practitioner a couple of days after treatment for assessment of your progress;</li><li>avoid strenuous exercise for a couple of weeks;</li><li>avoid scratching or picking at the skin to reduce the chances of scarring. Antihistamines may be recommended if you have lots of itching during healing;</li><li>start using a sunscreen about 2 weeks after the procedure, and avoid any direct exposure to the sun for around 6 weeks;</li><li>contact your practitioner immediately if you notice any signs of infection, scarring or pigment changes. </li></ul>
