Experiencing a feeling of laxity or a lack of tightness in the vagina is common for women after childbirth or the menopause. This can have an affect on both sexual satisfaction and self esteem, but also cause functional issues with continence. The loss of vaginal tightness is more common after having large babies through vaginal delivery or with multiple births. The looseness felt in the area can lead to decreased feeling during sexual intercourse, for both the woman and her partner, which can lead to frustration and have a negative impact on the relationship. Most women do not discuss this concern with their primary GP and suffer in silence or get told to simply perform pelvic floor exercises, however, many treatments are now available to help tighten the vaginal tissue and improve all aspects of its function.
