Excessive sweating is known medically as hyperhidrosis. It affects both men and women and it is said that around 3% of the global population suffers from hyperhidrosis. It most commonly occurs in the underarms, called axillary hyperhidrosis, but can also affect the hands (palmar hyperhidrosis), the feet (plantar hyperhidrosis), or the face and scalp (facial hyperhidrosis). Some people also suffer from hyperhidrosis in the genital area (inguinal hyperhidrosis). The condition can also be made worse by stress and anxiety. It is true that most people don’t like to sweat, but for those diagnosed with a hyperhydrotic condition it can cause significant problems with their everyday life, dominating everything they do in their work and social lives as they regularly change their clothes and shoes, frequently bathe or avoid having to shake hands or speak in public. Often normal and medicated anti-perspirant products are not effective enough to reduce the excess sweat. Reducing their levels of sweating to more normal levels, or being able to stop it completely for periods of time can be life changing and treatments are now available.
