Cellulite is very common, affecting between 85 and 98 percent of women. It is often mistakenly associated with being overweight but cellulite also affects very slim individuals. It only affects women due to the way that females store fat in the lower body. Cellulite is often characterised as having an orange peel or cottage cheese appearance to the skin on the buttocks and thighs. This pitted look is due to the underlying fat cells in the area pushing up through the skin and fibrous connective tissue that is just below the skin, this causes the fat cells to bulge through the limited space available to them, leading to this dimpled appearance.
