Also referred to as the mask of pregnancy, melasma or chloasma is a skin condition which often occurs in women during pregnancy. It causes the formation of darker coloured patches of pigmented skin on the face, neck, chest and arms. Depending on the time of year, these patches can become darker and more visible and recede at other times. Darker skin types can also suffer from melasma. Treatments are aimed at targeting and reducing the pigmented skin cells in the area of concern.
