It is important that if you think you have a lump or bump on your face or body that you have it professionally checked. Being able to identify benign, non-harmful blemishes, as compared to potentially cancerous ones is something best done by trained medical professionals. Depending on the lesion, it can then be safely removed or referred onwards for dermatological treatment. Skin tags are caused by skin irritation and commonly found around areas of rubbing from clothing or jewellery such as in the armpit, groin, bra area or neck. They are harmless, skin-coloured growths of excess skin and can easily be removed. Warts or verrucas are small skin growths which are caused by a virus and can also be easily treated and removed. Moles are more significant. Usually brown, small, round or oval with a smooth edge, they can be flat or raised and some surround a hair follicle. It is important to note if a mole changes shape or colour, grows rapidly, bleeds or becomes irregular as this could be a sign of a cancerous or melanoma formation which requires expert treatment.
