Facial scarring caused by acne or chickenpox are very common in both men and women and depending on the type, severity and quantity of scarring can affect the individual’s self-esteem. Acne scarring is most often of an atrophic type, meaning that it is indented into the skin, leaving little pits. Many women use camouflage make-up to hide acne scarring on their cheeks and become very self-conscious about it. Other scarring caused by illness, accident or other surgical treatment can also be bothersome and upsetting, especially in the case where something hasn’t healed the way it should have and produces a red, raised scar, known as a keloid scar, more common in those with darker skin types. Individual scars and broad scarring from acne can be improved with a variety of non-surgical treatments.
