French company ABR Development (now part of Stiefel Laboratories Inc.), the pharmacists who invented Sculptra™, launched their new volumising filler product, Atlèan™ βTCP, in the UK in June 2007.
However, it is not a commonly used filler in the UK.
Atlèan™ is a tri-calcium phosphate product in the form of a white gel which the manufacturer claims gives the same volumising and sculpting visual effects as the poly-l-lactic acid based filler, Sculptra™ but without the 4 - 6 week wait to see the benefits. This is due to the fact that Atlèan™ also contains hyaluronic acid which gives an immediate visible result, which lasts for up to 3 months, whilst the tri-calcium phosphate helps to stimulate the production of new collagen in the treated area for a longer lasting result.
The manufacturer therefore claims that the product can help cause new collagen growth rather than just mechanically filling depressions, making it a sculpting agent rather than just a wrinkle filler; although the addition of a recognised wrinkle filling agent (hyaluronic acid) into the product means that patient satisfaction from an immediate visible result is greater.
A 1ml syringe of Atlèan™ contains 70mg of Tri-Calcium Phosphate (TCP), 18mg of hyaluronic acid and 8mg of carmellose sodium (a stabilising agent), within a 1ml of buffered saline solution.
TCP is bio-compatible (compatible with body tissues), bio-degradable, immunologically inert (i.e. does not effect the immune system) and non-toxic. It has been used in medicine for years, for example, in bone regeneration after fractures.
The non-animal based hyaluronic acid is derived from bacterial fermentation.
The TCP is manufactured by chemical synthesis of phosphate icons and calcium.
No allergy test needed.
Atlèan™ is completely re-absorbable and not permanent.
Hyaluronic acid is completely broken down within the skin over a period of months, eventually leaving no trace of the filler.
TCP is completely broken down within the skin over a period of about 10 months, according to clinical studies, however the results (new collagen growth) can last for 12 – 15 months, based on current data.
Medical device.
Atlèan™ gained CE-Mark approval in Europe in July 2006.
Trained members of the medical profession only.
Atlèan
Atlèan™ comes in a box of 2 x 1ml syringes with 26 or 27 gauge needles for the practitioner to use.
It is used to treat naso-labial (nose-to-mouth) folds, marionette (mouth-to-chin) lines, plus lines and wrinkles in other facial areas and for lip augmentation, facial contouring and remodelling of the chin and cheek areas, (e.g. sunken cheeks).
According to the manufacturer there are no known product related contra-indications to its use.
12 to 15 months. Treatment can last up to 3 months for the hyaluronic acid element of the product and up to 12 months for the TCP stimulated collagen effect; as quoted by the manufacturer.
The length of time Atlèan™ will last depends on various factors such as the structure of your skin, lifestyle, age, treatment area, and the injection technique of the practitioner.
During initial trials for the European CE Mark approval and 18 months into a multi-centre clinical trial there was no single reaction or side effect observed.
Transient erythema (redness), swelling, bruising, pain, itching, discoloration or tenderness at the injection site may be noticed post treatment, with typically spontaneous resolution within one or two days after injection into the skin.
There is a very rare and minimal risk of granuloma (small lumps), although none have been reported to date.
