<p>Launched in the UK at the beginning of 2006, Elastence™ is a new hyaluronic acid product from Inamed Inc. (now part of Allergan Inc.), aimed at restoring hydration, tone, and elasticity to the skin on the face, neck, décolletage (the area between the neck and breasts) and backs of the hands.</p>
<p>Treatment using Elastence™ is marketed as a <em>Biorevitalisation Treatment Programme™</em>. </p>
<p>The recommended injection technique is by superficial intradermal (within the top layer of skin) micro-injections. </p><br />
<h3>Generic name </h3>
<p>Non-animal and non modified hyaluronic acid.</p><br />
<h3>Is a skin test required before treatment? </h3>
<p>No allergy test needed. </p><br />
<h3>Is it temporary or permanent? </h3>
<p>Hyaluronic acid is completely broken down within the skin over a period of months, eventually leaving no trace of the filler. </p><br />
<h3>Licenced status </h3>
<p>Medical device. </p><br />
<h3>Should be used by </h3>
<p>Trained members of the medical profession only. </p><br />
<h3>Not to be used in </h3>
<p>Individuals with a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid.</p>
<p>Elastence™ should not be used in or near areas where there is active skin disease, inflammation or related conditions. </p>
<p>Elastence™ should not be injected into an area where a permanent implant has been placed. </p><br />
<h3>Duration of effect </h3>
<p>This depends upon your age and lifestyle as well as the correct placement of the product by a practitioner. </p>
<p>Generally, there are two main treatment programmes used within the<em> Biorevitalisation</em> <em>Treatment Programme</em> ™ with Elastence™, a <strong><em>Preventative Treatment</em></strong> and a <strong><em>Regenerative Treatment</em></strong>, (or the two can be combined for a <strong><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Complete Regenerative and Renewing Treatment</em></strong>). </p><br />
<p><strong><em>Preventative Treatment Programme </em></strong></p>
<ul><li>Designed for those under 45 years of age.</li><li>2 – 3 initial treatments, each 20 – 30 days apart.</li><li>Maintenance sessions on a bi-monthly basis. </li></ul><br />
<p><strong><em>Regenerative Treatment Programme </em></strong></p>
<ul><li>Designed for those over 45 years of age.</li><li>3 - 4 initial treatments, each 15 – 20 days apart.</li><li>Maintenance sessions on a bi-monthly basis. </li></ul><br />
<h3>Reported side effects </h3>
<p>After the injection of Elastence™ , some common injection related reactions might occur. These reactions include transient erythema (redness), swelling, pain, itching, discolouration or tenderness at the injection site. Typically resolution is spontaneous, within one or two days after injection into the skin. </p>
<p>Studies examining the tissue tolerability of  Elastence™ did not detect any long term side effects – however other treatments using hyaluronic acid products have occasionally resulted in temporary palpable lumpiness or localised reactions thought to be of a hypersensitivity nature. These are extremely rare affecting about 1 in every 10,000 treated patients. </p><br />
<h3>Costs </h3>
<p>This depends on the area treated and how much is required, and the practitioner doing the treatment, but prices start in the region of £150 per treatment, often with discounts for a course of treatments. </p><br />
<h3>Clinical results </h3>
<p>The manufacturers state that in a recent clinical trial, 100% of patients and 95% of doctors described the outcome of treatment with the <em>Biorevitalisation Treatment Programme</em> ™ as “excellent” or “good”. </p><br />
