A dimpled chin, often described with terms like 'golf ball' or 'peau d'orange,' is characterised by small, indent-like formations on the chin surface. This textural effect can vary from subtle to more pronounced based on muscular activity and skin condition. At its core, the dimpled appearance arises from overactivity or hypercontractility of the mentalis muscle, which is responsible for the wrinkling of the chin.
The primary factor behind a dimpled chin is genetic predisposition. If your parents or close relatives sport this trait, there's a fair chance you might, too. However, it's not just genetics that plays its part; ageing and lifestyle factors also contribute. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, and muscle tone changes, which can accentuate a previously unnoticed dimpled chin. Additionally, repetitive facial expressions and certain emotional habits can increase muscle tension in the chin, further promoting dimpling.
