Although no accurate statistics yet exist for the UK market, we have researched the clinics, suppliers and distributors involved in the cosmetic market in this country. Our findings are that the choice and range of new aesthetic treatments and procedures, many coming from the U.S., have helped to cause rapid and continuing growth over the last 10 years.
The most startling growth in all cosmetic treatment is in the so-called non-invasive treatments. These do not involve any form of surgery and include things such as mild chemical peels to improve the complexion. This new generation of products and procedures offer visible and immediate treatment results with very little recovery time. They are also priced in such a way that makes them more affordable to the general public.
These new, cheaper products are often more effective than older treatments. For example, the so -called “cosmeceutical” products, such as active skin creams and gels, which are only available in certain clinics or salons seem to be more successful in the treatment of ageing skin than the mass-market moisturisers which you can see advertised almost everywhere.
There is also a new, “middle-way” of cosmetic treatments that have been available since the mid 1990s. These do not involve surgery, but are more invasive than the use of a cream or gel. Injections of botulinum toxin (Botox®) for the improvement of frown lines, the dermal filler Restylane® for wrinkles, laser and IPL treatments for hair removal and skin rejuvenation, and microdermabrasion for improvement in skin tone and texture, are all now very popular and exemplify this quick and easy approach to cosmetic treatments.
There have also been huge advances in surgical techniques, which have improved the results and safety of many of the more aggressive cosmetic operations. For example, breast implants, breast reduction, liposuction and facelifts are being taken up by the general public in greater numbers than ever before.
