<DIV align=center>Introduction to the ASDS 2003 Statistics</DIV>
The number of skin surgery procedures performed in 2003 rose to 4.1 million, according to national statistics released by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS). The 2003 total represents an 11% increase compared to 2001 when the group conducted its benchmark study of procedures to improve the health, function and cosmetic appearance of skin. In particular, minimally invasive and non-ablative cosmetic procedures show a significant increase compared to 2001.

 ASDS compiled the 2003 Biennial Member Practice Profile Survey as the most accurate estimate of the total number of cosmetic, therapeutic and reconstructive skin surgery procedures performed by dermatologic surgeons in the United States this year. Data collection and analysis was conducted by The Loevy Consulting Group, an independent research firm, and based on responses to written survey questionnaires sent to a random sample of 1000 ASDS members. The data are gathered over the course of four months and then projected to reflect the entire membership for a single complete year.

<DD>Dermatologic surgeons are the unrivaled specialists in the diagnosis, removal, closure and overall treatment of skin cancer. From Mohs micrographic surgery to simple biopsy and excisions, as well as preventive laser therapy of pre-cancerous growths, skin surgery specialists can control and effectively treat skin cancer with early detection. </DD></DL>

<DT>Resurfacing. 
<DD>Using such techniques as chemical peels, laser therapy or microdermabrasion, resurfacing procedures are designed to remove or buff the top layers of aged, discolored or irregular skin. Fresh skin is then generated, which is typically smoother, less wrinkled and more even in color. Resurfacing is also beneficial in the treatment of scarring. Dermatologic surgeons pioneered the concept of resurfacing more than 50 years ago and have perfected a range of methods and solutions to achieve a rejuvenated appearance. </DD></DL>

<DD>Laser and light-based technologies have revolutionized the therapeutic and cosmetic practice of dermatologic surgery. From the improvement of birthmarks, age spots and broken blood vessels to the removal of unwanted hair and tattoos, these minimally invasive procedures enable dermatologic surgeons to safely and effectively treat a variety of skin conditions in the doctor’s office without scalpel surgery. Rapidly emerging in dermatologic practice is the use of laserand light therapy for acne and inflammatory disorders. </DD></DL>

<DT>Vein Treatments. 
<DD>There are a number of treatment options that improve vein conditions by removing or destroying the damaged spider or varicose vein. Sclerotherapy using a very small needle and chemical solution is considered the gold standard of care. For certain types of leg veins and broken blood vessels on the face, dermatologic surgeons may perform ambulatory phlebectomy, endovenous techniques, laser surgery or pulsed light therapy. </DD></DL>

<DT>Non-Ablative Skin Rejuvenation. 
<DD>Non-ablative lasers and lightbased devices are referred to as “non-wounding” because they bypass the top skin layers and penetrate beneath the skin surface to stimulate collagen production and tighten underlying skin without patient downtime. These skin rejuvenation techniques are ideal for those with mild to moderate aging and sun-damaged skin. </DD></DL>

<DD>Dermatologic surgeons have developed and tested various injectable substances to fill and erase wrinkles, fill and plump furrows and hollows in the face, and enhance the definition of the lips. In addition to collagen-based wrinkle fillers, popular substances include one’s own fat, hyaluronic acid, plastic microbeads, synthetic bone and liquid silicone. </DD></DL>

<DIV align=center>Who is a Dermatologic Surgeon</DIV> A dermatologic surgeon is a skin surgery specialist who focuses on the health and beauty of your skin — from head to toe, from the cradle to the golden years. Nearly all dermatologic surgeons perform both medically necessary and cosmetic surgery procedures to maintain the health, function and appearance of your skin. Dermatologic surgeons are Board-certified physicians who successfully complete medical school and a one-year internship, followed by a specialized three-year dermatology residency program. They then continue their research and training through accredited Continuing Medical Education in the form of ongoing post-graduate courses and symposia, staying abreast of the latest clinical advances and technologies in their field. 
<DIV align=center>Expertise of ASDS Dermatologic Surgeons</DIV> Survey findings reveal that nearly all dermatologic surgeons (94%) report treating skin cancer, attesting to the sub-specialty’s core competency in surgical techniques to combat the prevalent disease. A powerhouse in cosmetic skin surgery, nearly two-thirds of all dermatologic surgeons report performing anti-aging procedures such as vein treatment (68%), resurfacing (64%), botox® (63%), laser/light therapy (58%) and soft tissue fillers (55%).

<DIV align=center>Survey Methodology</DIV> The survey was designed in two parts: a one-page questionnaire focused on general office and practice activities and another one-page questionnaire focused on specific procedures. There were four versions of the procedure questionnaire, each asking about a different combination of two or three procedures so that we were able to ask about ten different procedures in detail. ASDS members living in the United States and Canada were eligible for the survey. From this population, we drew a simple random sample of 1000 members and then randomly assigned the sample to one of the four procedure sub-samples. The field period began in early January and ended in early May. The overall response rate was 44%. In general, the procedure categories are based on what is accomplished for the patient, i.e., condition treated, rather than the technique used. Because these statistics report on reconstructive, therapeutic and cosmetic skin surgery procedures and patients rather than each body site at which a procedure is performed, the data reflects the frequency of select cosmetic surgery procedures done by ASDS members in the larger medical marketplace. All point estimates have an associated standard error.
