Melasma is a common skin condition in adults where brown or dark patches of pigmentation develop. Usually on the face, but can appear on areas of the body exposed to sunlight, including the neck, shoulders, hands and forearms
Melasma is harmless but can cause distress and impact the quality of life of those who suffer from it. 10%of all cases occur in men. Women with darker skin tones and who are pregnant are at a greater risk of developing Melasma. It occurs when the melanocytes (cells that make melanin) overproduce and cause pigmentation.
Triggers can be hormonal, inappropriate skin care products, sun exposure, birth control pills and can also be genetic.
