Acne scars are one of the most permanent and distressing consequences of acne.
Acne can leave behind shallow or deep pock-marks which may be highlighted by discolouration of the skin due to hyperpigmentation (when the skin gets darker) or hypopigmentation (when the skin gets lighter).
So is there any way that these can be effectively treated without spending thousands of pounds on laser or deep chemical peels with all the risks involved with these procedures?

Fortunately the answer is yes. Micro-needling, or collagen induction therapy is a treatment where tiny needles are inserted many times each second into the top layer of the skin up to a depth of 2.5mm in medical microneedling treatments, and studies have shown that this is a safe and effective way to treat rolling or box-car acne scars. A further study looking at the effect of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and microneedling on acne scars in comparison to microneedling with Vitamin C serum, has shown that microneedling combined with platelet rich plasma is superior in terms of achieving an excellent result after four treatment sessions. PRP contains a number of different cellular growth factors that help to promote collagen growth, so it is not surprising that this helps to achieve a better result. The Microneedling plus Vitamin C group did do better than the PRP group in one respect though, and that was that more of them saw a reduction in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than the PRP group.
The Bottom LineSo the bottom line is that is if you want to get the best results for the treatment of your acne scars from microneedling, you are better off combining it with PRP than with Vitamin C serum. However, if skin marking due to hyperpigmentation is your main worry then microneedling plus Vitamin C might be a better choice.
