Is SPF the most important anti-ageing health product? We asked skin health expert and skincare designer Claire Williams, the CEO and founder of Circa Skin Limited, to discuss with us why SPF in her opinion the most important product in her portfolio.
SPF is vital for preventing many issues associated with ageing. The biggest accelerators are UVA, UVB and IR-A. Before I developed my own SPF, even the most “technical” and expensive formulas were still unwearable for me - I couldn’t get enough on to stop my freckles breaking through. I’m Fitzpatrick II with red hair, and protecting my skin as I get older is non-negotiable.
Since launching Synergy 6 by Intradermology and wearing SPF every day, my skin has improved dramatically. I no longer have freckles—just a couple of tiny, persistent pigmentation spots that don’t bother me. Let’s look at the health case for SPF and why the formulation is key
Skin cancer in the UK is rising, so daily wearable protection really matters
If British weather had a résumé, it would say “unpredictable.” UV, on the other hand, turns up every day, even when it’s cloudy. That mismatch helps explain why UK skin-cancer rates continue to climb and why a sunscreen you’ll actually wear (and reapply) is essential. We are now seeing more melanomas diagnosed than a decade ago, and 9 out of 10 are linked to excess UV and sunbed usage.
