Clinically known as "pruritus", itchy skin is one of the lesser-known symptoms of menopause. Although, it's estimated that 64% of women in this transitional period are affected by varying degrees of skin pain.We asked Circa Skin, on how to manage itchy skin during menopause.
"Experiencing itchy skin during menopause is a common concern due to the natural decline in oestrogen levels, which can lead to dryness and thinning of the skin. This symptom can vary in duration, often lasting from a few months to several years, depending on individual hormonal changes and overall skin health."
Claire Williams the CEO of Circa Skin noticed her skin was itchy as the main issue with peri-menopause.
"I didn’t notice any changes in my skin, no redness, no dryness, I just had incredible itchy arms and in between my fingers, I was taking anti-histamines to try and stop the itching and they worked a little bit. It wasn’t until I started HRT in particular oestrogen that my itchiness lessened."
Circa Skin recommends using gentle, hydrating skincare products specifically formulated for sensitive skin such as the PEP-UP serum and Intense Repair complex from Intradermology to alleviate itchy skin. Both are formulated for the face but can be used on itchy body patches. Incorporating supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E can also help improve skin hydration and elasticity. Additionally, regular use of unfragranced body moisturisers, staying hydrated, and avoiding harsh soaps or hot showers can prevent further skin irritation.
Preventative measures include maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential fatty acids and natural phytoestrogens such as hummus, flax seeds, broccoli and other nuts and seeds, using a humidifier to keep air moisture levels up, and wearing loose, breathable clothing to reduce skin friction.
If symptoms persist, consulting with a dermatologist or a menopause specialist can provide tailored advice and potential treatments to enhance skin comfort during menopause.
