Common Causes of Hyperpigmentation:
Sun Exposure:
Prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays is a leading cause of hyperpigmentation. The sun stimulates the production of melanin as a defense mechanism, resulting in dark spots and uneven skin tone.
Hormonal Changes:
Hormonal fluctuations, especially during pregnancy, can trigger a condition known as
melasma
. This form of hyperpigmentation is characterized by brown patches on the face and is commonly referred to as the “mask of pregnancy.”
Inflammation and Skin Trauma:
Skin injuries, such as
acne
, wounds, or inflammation, can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This occurs as the skin heals and excess melanin is produced, leaving behind discoloured areas.
Genetics:
Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing hyperpigmentation. If your family has a history of skin conditions, you may be more susceptible to pigmentation issues.
