What Causes Acne?
Acne occurs when hair follicles in the skin get blocked by oil and dead skin cells, causing spots to form. It’s most common during adolescence, but adults can also suffer from acne, particularly women. In fact, adult acne has been on the rise in recent years.
Genetics is the primary cause of acne. Your genes determine how much oil your skin produces. However, lifestyle factors, such as diet and stress, can play a role in making acne worse.
The Western Diet and Acne
Researchers have found that modern lifestyles, including the high-sugar, high-fat Western diet, may aggravate acne. Foods with a high glycaemic index (GI) – which raise blood sugar levels quickly – can lead to spikes in insulin, which increases inflammation and oil production in the skin. This can clog pores and lead to more breakouts.
Chocolate, surprisingly, has a low to medium GI, which makes it less likely to cause these insulin spikes compared to foods like white bread or sugary snacks. However, studies that have tested the effects of pure dark chocolate on acne have found mixed results, and these studies often have small sample sizes, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions.
