What Causes Acne Scars?
Scars are the body’s response or over-response to trauma. This can come from acne spots themselves or from picking at acne and scabs.
While not all acne leads to scarring, when it does occur, it’s usually the result of inflammatory acne lesions, such as red pimples, papules and cysts. The greater the inflammation, the higher the risk of permanent scarring.
Acne scarring often occurs because the bacteria involved in acne release chemicals that increase inflammation and damage the skin. This extra inflammation can interfere with the skin’s healing process, making it more likely for scars to form. That’s why more severe acne is often followed by some degree of scarring.
