“We think all skin types need the same level of moisture, however in some cases, skin can maintain its own hydration levels”, comments Kelly Saynor, Aesthetic Nurse and Clinical Director and Founder of Medica Forte. “Over-moisturising sends a signal to skin sensors to halt the natural production, leaving us with skin that is sluggish and lacking in moisture, making us reach for even heavier formulas that exacerbate the problem. This overloading of occlusive formulas can also clog pores and slow down the vital natural surface renewal.”
But how do we know if we have lazy skin? “The tell-tale signs can include tightness, dryness, dullness, congestion, frequent breakouts and an increase in appearance of fine lines” says Saynor. “Instead of reaching for a thick moisturiser at the first signs, we should be giving our skin the tools it needs to do a better job on its own.”
“Firstly, we need to rid skin of any dead cells, stopping the skin from reflecting light. They can really steal our glow. Chemical exfoliation is great for ridding skin of dead cells, revealing a brighter complexion. At-home AHA and PHA’s will help kick start cell regeneration, however for a real reboot, an in-clinic resurfacing peel could do just the trick. The Perfect Peel® Superblend is a revolutionary chemical peel that works to transform skin into looking younger, healthier and clearer in just one week, with full results at a 4-6 weeks. Perfect for those looking to target anti-ageing, pigmentation or acne.”
Saynor also recommends choosing a lighter, paired back, skincare regime, one that you layer with gentler products, especially for those with oily or reactive skin. “Adding a Vitamin C into your regime will help keep skin working the way it should. It plays an important role in stimulating our natural moisturising factors, compounds within the skin to keep it hydrated and improve barrier function.” When it comes to moisturisers “look for products that contain low to medium levels of glycerine and hyaluronic acid. As they are already part of the skin’s natural moisturising system, they won’t upset the sensors when applied”.
