Clearly the surgeon must advise the patient on the risks and benefits of all the various surgical options which might meet the patient's desired outcome. There is little room for paternalism - the patient seeking elective surgery which is designed to meet their desires is entitled to know of a small risk of a serious consequence.
Advising fully as to one option, but failing to refer to other available alternatives may result in a finding that informed consent was not obtained - Birch-v-UCL Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
