From the Editor's Desk....

Body Beautiful is the UK's only event to demystify the world of cosmetic treatments and beauty products.

The organisers of the Body Beautiful Show are delighted to announce that the show will be supported by The Times newspaper this year. Adam Taylor, Marketing Manager for the event commented,
"We are delighted to have secured the endorsement of the UK’s best selling broadsheet in this the second year of the Body Beautiful Show."
Though the full schedule of activity has yet to be announced we can confirm that The Times will be involved in show features, a schedule of editorial and promotional support throughout the month prior to the show, and the publication of a pull-out supplement which will be published in association with the event.

As Adam explains,
"As part of our ongoing partnership with The Consulting Room™ we will be working together to create a supplement which will educate and inform Times readers about cosmetic treatments and their alternatives, whilst previewing the type of information that will be available at the event."
Following the successful launch of the Body Beautiful Show in September last year, organisers - Mash Events – have already announced that the show, this September 24th and 25th, will be moving to the much larger Olympia venue.

Body beautiful is the UK’s first consumer event dedicated to the exploration of surgical, non-surgical and alternative cosmetic treatments; for more information and to register your interest please visit

Feature Article

Technology to Rival Lipostabil®?
The VelaSmooth™ by Syneron has been receiving rave reviews in the US

The use of Lipostabil® for fat reduction has gained a level of media interest and demand unseen since the early days of Botox®. Unfortunately its status as an unlicensed medicine for any indication in the UK has led to a crackdown on its use and importation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). There are now a large number of consumers who are seeking fat reduction treatments with Physicians unclear about legalities of purchasing and using phosphatidylcholine, (of which Lipostabil® is one brand).

There is, however, another alternative on the horizon which can be freely advertised and marketed without contravening advertising standards guidelines and which appears to have demonstrated excellent clinical results in both fat reduction and cellulite. The VelaSmooth™ by Syneron has been receiving rave reviews in the US and is the first clinically proven medical device to treat cellulite and non-invasively contour the body.

New Product Reviews

Evolence™

Launched in the UK at the beginning of 2005, EVOLENCE™ is a new, long lasting, porcine (derived from pigs) collagen-based dermal filler; which the makers claim will last at least 12 months.

The manufacturers state that EVOLENCE™, unlike bovine (cow) derived fillers, is able to mimic the properties of the natural collagen found in the skin and therefore, while an allergic reaction is theoretically possible, it is extremely rare so pre-testing is not required before treatment with EVOLENCE™.

Esthelis®
Esthélis® is a new hyaluronic acid filler created in Switzerland and designed from biofermentation hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in our bodies; which the makers claim makes it safe.

Esthélis® has two main different formulations within it's range, Basic and Soft.

Esthélis® Basic is an ideal product for volume enhancement treatments and can be used for deep furrows, lip augmentation, facial outlines, nose to mouth furrows, frown lines and the correction of facial depressions, either due to injury or age-related scaring.

Esthélis® Soft is an ideal substance for superficial wrinkles and can be used for wrinkles around the eyes, crow's feet, lips, and forehead wrinkles.

Esthélis® Men has the same characteristics and the same advantages as Esthélis® Basic, but is packaged in a black carton – a novel concept aimed at specifically appealing to men in the dermal filler market.

Esthélis® Duo is packaged to feature a syringe of Basic plus a syringe of Soft.

Smooth Operators (Evolence™)
Evolence™ is the latest, much-hyped cosmetic filler to tempt the wrinkle-conscious. But are we putting vanity before safety?

Sniggering at actress Leslie Ash's disastrously over-plumped upper lip has become something of a national sport over the last few years. But cosmetic injectable implants are not always a laughing matter.

Four weeks ago, Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer, warned that collagen fillers are capable of transmitting blood-borne diseases, including vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of BSE). He called for a clampdown on cowboy clinics and aesthetic fillers, some of which have been found to contain material from dead bodies and birds.

Even so, last Wednesday morning Annie Ashdown happily allowed a doctor to inject a couple of syringes of Evolence™, a new, long-term collagen filler, into her naso-labial folds.

L`Oreal Set To Launch Men`s Anti-Ageing Line
Dermo-Expertise, L'Oreal's skin care treatment division, says it will launch what is claimed to be the first comprehensive men's anti-ageing line to hit mass market retailers in the US.

Named Men's Expert, it is a comprehensive line of men's skin care products designed to address the needs of each man's skin as he ages. With eight different products that each incorporate customized technology to meet the unique needs of men's skin, men of all ages can treat and care for their skin with sophisticated and advanced products that are conveniently sold and priced.

9.2 Million Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Procedures in 2004 – Up 5% Growth Paces U.S. Economy Despite Reality TV Fad
American Society of Plastic Surgeons Reports Annual Statistics

Reality TV shows are creating a greater public awareness of cosmetic surgery and may attribute to the growth in procedures, however, these shows have not caused a rampant increase. The number of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures increased 5 percent in 2004, with more than 9.2 million procedures performed – a growth rate steady with that of the U.S. economy, according to statistics released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Cosmetic Surgery is Becoming `Trivialised`
Plastic surgeons warned yesterday that the popularity of cosmetic procedures was trivialising the specialty, with people failing to realise that they were often seeking major operations.

Fictional and documentary television programmes had warned of some of the possible dangers of things going wrong but they said cosmetic surgery was not a "quick fix".

Teenage Lives `At Risk From Sunbeds`
Britain is facing an epidemic of skin cancer in 10 years unless teenagers are banned from using sunbeds, experts warn.

More than 7,000 Britons contracted the disease last year - up nearly 25 per cent on 10 years ago - and the cancer, also known as malignant melanoma, is the third most common one among young people.

Experts say exposure to damaging ultraviolet rays when under 18 increases the risk.
