Liposuction Pioneer Sees Male Numbers Rise

New Technique As Performed on Louis Theroux Lures Men

London, UK- 4th February 2008- As figures announced by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that body contouring procedures (tummy tucks and Liposuction) are fast becoming the surgery of choice for men, Mr. Bryan Mayou, one of the world’s most highly respected liposuction practitioners who helped introduce the procedure to the UK 25 years ago, today ascribed much of the increase to new and safe technology such as the BodyJet: water-jet assisted liposuction as portrayed in Louis Theroux’s recent documentary ‘Under the Knife’ and now available at the prestigious Cadogan Clinic in Chelsea, London.

The BAAPS have reported a 61% increase in male tummy tucks and almost 20% increase in liposuction for men – last year, in fact, liposuction went from being the 8th most popular procedure overall to being the third. Bryan Mayou has suggested that the new technique, which involves local anaesthetic and causes less bruising and down time, has helped pave the way for its growing  popularity.

According to Bryan Mayou, consultant plastic surgeon at Cadogan Clinic and BAAPS member; “I’m not surprised to see that both liposuction and tummy tucks have increased rapidly among men as Britain is becoming a more image-conscious society overall. The BodyJet treatment involves a jet of
water containing adrenaline and local anaesthesia to dislodge fat and numb the tissue just before it is removed, and the adrenaline reduces bruising. The result is that smaller or larger volumes of fat can be easily removed. Most cases are actually carried out under local anaesthesia alone.”

Bryan Mayou has been carrying out the technique for the last few years, and works closely with BodyJet’s inventor Dr. Harmut Meyer, who will also be offering the procedure at the Cadogan Clinic.

Bryan adds; “This procedure is much less painful, which is why it can be carried out under local anaesthesia. It is a much more accepted procedure for those who don’t want to be burdened with a lot of down time, so it’s ideal for those who want to get back to their daily activities quickly.”
