Ablation
(Adjective: Ablative) The process of removing the outermost layers of the skin in a precise and controlled way to the appropriate depth, normally used in reference to laser devices used for skin resurfacing.
Actinic Keratosis
Actinic Keratosis (AKs) are very common, precancerous lesions that arise on sun damaged skin. Extensive sun exposure and skin type are the most important factors in their development.
Adipocytes
The medical term for fat cells.
Adipose Tissue
Commonly known as fat.
Aesthetics
Aesthetics (or esthetics) is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty. An aesthetic procedure is one in which the principal purpose is to improve the appearance.
AHAs
Alpha Hydroxyl Acids or AHAs are commonly found in many different concentrations in various skincare products. The most common types are glycolic, lactic, malic, citric and tartaric acids which remove the topmost layer of the skin for a rejuvenated appearance.
Alopecia
A loss of hair or baldness.
Antihistamines
Drugs used, often for the treatment of hayfever, that can help to reduce itching in the skin.
Antioxidant
A substance that helps create a barrier from "free radial" damage. Free radicals are formed naturally when oxygen is metabolised (burned) by the body, called oxidation. Oxidation is what causes most of the visible signs of ageing in the skin.
Antioxidants include Beta Carotene, Pomegranate, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Goji Berry, Ellagic acid, Ginkgo Biloba, Rose Hips, Garlic, Grape seed, Bilberry, Seaweed and Green tea.
Apraclonidine
Trade name Iopidine - drug used for the treatment of glaucoma (raised pressures in the eyeball).
Areola
The brownish area of skin that surrounds the nipple of the breast.
Arnica
Arnica has been used in Europe for centuries to treat swelling, soreness and bruising. Arnica may significantly increase healing time or the appearance of such. There are many formulations from different companies including a stronger formulation that some plastic surgeons recommend for their patients.
Ascorbic Acid
The chemical name for Vitamin C. (See also L-Ascorbic Acid).
Atopic Dermatitis
(Also called Eczema) - a skin disorder that is characterized by itching, scaling, thickening of the skin, and is usually located on the face, elbows, knees, and arms.
Atrophy
A shrinkage or wasting away of a body's tissue (organ, cells, muscles etc.); such as "lipoatrophy" - the loss of subcutaneous (stored under the skin) fat, causing small indentations, especially in cheeks and commonly seen in ageing and HIV positive people.
Axillae
(Plural of Axilla)
The armpits.
