The Consulting Room™ (www.consultingroom.com) is the ONLY major UK online clinic search directory who check that all sponsored listed clinics in our database (those with Gold membership) are registered with the relevant government regulatory body for the country in which they operate (where required), and that medical practitioners are also registered with their respective medical bodies.
Currently any clinic offering Cosmetic Surgery or Laser, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or Light Heat Energy (LHE) treatments within England must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (formerly the Healthcare Commission) or with the Health Inspectorate in Wales or the Regulation & Quality Improvement Authority in Northern Ireland. Requirements for clinics in Scotland include only Cosmetic Surgery providers who must register with the Care Commission. No legislation currently exists for clinics operating in the Republic of Ireland (Eire).
Clinics offering other, non-registerable services, such as dental services, cosmetic injectables (i.e. botulinum toxins and dermal fillers) or other non-surgical procedures are not currently required to register with these organisations, (unless they offer registerable services as well), hence The Consulting Room™ does not need to verify registration in those cases, however we will still verify registration with medical bodies or request demonstrable specialist qualifications and assign our Verified By Consulting Room™ logo upon confirmation.
 Any clinic offering cosmetic surgery or laser/IPL treatments which is not registered with the appropriate regulator is operating illegally and will probably also not be insured (through invalidation), should anything go wrong, so it is important to check clinic compliance.
In England, this regulation is set to remain until October 2010 when the Care Quality Commission will cease to be responsible for regulating clinics in the use of Laser, IPL and LHE devices for cosmetic indications such as hair removal; (registration for cosmetic surgery services will remain). This will come to an end in favour of a voluntary, self-regulation model which the Department of Health has requested be set up by the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services (IHAS), who are also producing a similar scheme for clinics offering cosmetic injectables such as dermal fillers and botulinum toxins. These self-regulatory schemes have yet to launch but is expected in early 2010. By checking the credentials of clinics and/or practitioners who register with us, in terms of registration and certification by government regulatory bodies as well as membership of medical bodies such as the General Medical Council, the Nursing & Midwifery Council and the General Dental Council, we hope to provide peace of mind that a level of vetting has been performed on service providers within our Find a Clinic directory. Where a clinic is proven by us to be registered with the required national regulatory body for the services that they provide, where these services are registerable, an appropriate logo is displayed on ConsultingRoom.com for said body. Although the former Healthcare Commission permitted English clinics registered with it to display its logo on their electronic and hard copy publications and permitted this use by The Consulting Room™, the newly formed Care Quality Commission has taken the stance to forbid the use of its logo by registered providers and all other third parties. It states; “The use of the Care Quality Commission logo by external parties is prohibited under any circumstances - this is to prevent any implication of endorsement. As a regulatory body, the Care Quality Commission cannot be seen to act in a way that could be construed as support for a particular organisation or service provider.”
For this reason The Consulting Room™ has launched our own logo to help consumers verify that an English clinic is indeed registered with the Care Quality Commission (where required) and that this has been confirmed by us.
